Long‑Distance Cycling Adventures

Custom image

For many Westerley riders, the best days on the bike are the long ones — the rides where you head out with friends, explore new roads, discover great cafés, and enjoy the shared satisfaction of covering real distance under your own steam. These adventures aren’t races. They’re about pacing, camaraderie, and the simple pleasure of spending a day on the bike with good company.

Long‑distance riding comes in many forms. Some riders love a steady 100 km loop into the Chilterns. Others enjoy big‑day challenges like the Dragon Ride, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, or Étape du Tour, where you can test yourself on iconic climbs in a supportive, organised environment. And for those who want to combine cycling with travel, destination rides — from Mallorca to the Alps to the Isle of Wight — offer unforgettable experiences and a chance to explore new landscapes together.

Whatever your pace or ambition, there’s a long‑distance adventure to suit you, and plenty of Westerley members who’ll happily guide you through your first big ride.

Audaxes – One Style of Long‑Distance Riding

Audaxes are one of the most established and enjoyable ways to take on long‑distance cycling. They’re non‑competitive, time‑limited rides where you follow a set route and collect “controls” along the way. Distances typically start at 100 km and can go well beyond 1,000 km.

Rides of 200 km and above earn Audax Points (1 point per 100 km), and hillier events can also count towards Audax Altitude Award (AAA) points. These contribute to national awards and personal milestones for riders who enjoy setting themselves longer‑term goals.

Westerley has a strong Audax community. Members regularly take part in UK and international events — including classics like Paris–Brest–Paris, London–Edinburgh–London, and ultra‑distance challenges such as the Transcontinental Race. Others prefer more relaxed DIY Audaxes, starting and finishing in West London, where the emphasis is on good company and a well‑planned route.

Details of upcoming DIYs and group entries for Calendar Audaxes appear on our WhatsApp group and Spond site, and members frequently car‑share to events outside the area.

If you’re curious about trying your first long‑distance ride — whether that’s a Gran Fondo, an Audax, or a big day out with friends — you’ll find plenty of encouragement and experience within the club.
